Understanding the Green Card Qualification Criteria
Researchers, professors and scientists may be eligible to pursue green cards for permanent residency in the United States on the basis of certain special categorizations. EB-2 visas are available for people with advanced degrees or exceptional ability in their fields, while EB-1 visas are available for people with outstanding or extraordinary ability.
Prospective immigrants are classified into these categories on the basis of objective evidence of their accomplishments and prestige within their fields. Questions you may be asked during this process include the following:
- Have you ever served on a Ph.D. panel?
- Have you been published?
- Have you received awards in your field?
- Have you been evaluated through a peer review process?
- Have you been invited to join societies based on your achievements?
If you qualify for an EB-2 or EB-1 visa, the immigration and green card process can be substantially expedited. However, demonstrating that you meet the threshold requirements for eligibility can be an involved process.
