The immigration process can prove difficult to understand, especially for those who are unsure of where they stand legally and what programs for which they may qualify. For children who came to the United States illegally, deportation as an adult is a possibility. This is particularly true if there are legal issues or convictions for certain crimes. Anyone in Maryland who came to the United States as a child may want to follow the plight of a young man who may be deported soon.
The 19-year-old man originally came to this country when he was 10 years old. He is currently being detained after traveling to visit family in another state. He was taken into custody; however, he and his fiancée were able to legally marry while he was being detained.
The man applied to stay in the United States under the program for deferred action for childhood arrivals. That application was denied based on the fact that the man has several convictions. Authorities contend that he was affiliated with a gang, but those who are trying to help the young man deny any gang affiliation.
Immigration cases can become very complex for families and individuals in Maryland when adults have come to this country as children. While there are specific programs available to help those in that situation, those programs can change and evolve over time. Those concerned with their own status or the possible deportation of a loved one may want to ensure that they always have up-to-date information and a source of legal help if necessary.
