Felony charge could lead to deportation for woman

On Behalf of | Sep 12, 2014 | U.S. Immigration Law |

Whenever a person is arrested on any kind of criminal charge, their immigration status may be a cause for concern. In Maryland and other states, being arrested for a felony charge could open the door to a possible deportation hearing. In a recent case making news, a woman may face deportation due to her alleged involvement in a hit and run incident.

The authorities claim that the woman’s vehicle struck a teenage pedestrian who was walking along the highway. The 17-year-old boy had run out of gas and died as a result of the alleged collision with the woman’s car. The woman was charged with leaving the scene of the accident and also failing to report an accident where there was a death, both of which are felonies that can result in prison time.

The 41-year-old woman was arrested and has been placed on detainer by immigration officials. Because of action by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the woman can’t bond out of the jail where she is being held. The woman has been made aware of her rights regarding the deportation possibility. It was not clear exactly how long the woman has been in the United States.

Deportation can be a scary and confusing process for anyone, regardless of the circumstances or reason they are facing the possible situation. It is important for anyone in Maryland who is concerned about their immigration status to understand what kinds of legal charges can lead to a possible deportation. It is also wise to be aware of the timeline for deportation and the implications it can have on a person’s future.
