Just a few months ago we blogged about the possibility of a measure in Maryland that could repeal the aftermath of stricter federal regulations issued in 2009, which resulted in a Maryland law prohibiting individuals unable to present proof of lawful immigration status from obtaining a driver’s licenses in the state.
The measure that would effectively allow immigrants living in the Maryland without legal permission to obtain a driver’s license. Three other states across the country already have laws providing for immigrant licensing. A happy update to the progress of this measure is that recently the Maryland House of Delegates passed the bill, which has already been approved by the Senate.
Allowing immigrant licensing in Maryland increases the safety of all because a driver’s license is required in order for an individual to obtain auto insurance. Accordingly, allowing more individuals to obtain a driver’s license is not only a win for immigration advocates, but could also promote the safety of all roadway travelers in Maryland. In addition, this measure could decrease the number of immigrants detained for minor traffic violations.
While talks of immigration reform and the like continue, countless individuals in the country struggle when they hit barriers in their pursuit of citizenship. Many immigrants may be unaware that a skilled immigration attorney can be of monumental assistance in both the pursuit of citizenship, and navigating any issues in relation to an individual’s immigration status. Any sort of infraction or mistake can be of paramount significance for an immigrant, but an immigration attorney can help an individual navigate these challenges.
